Intro to Dressmaking Weekend
Our Intro to Dressmaking Weekend is the perfect place to start if you want to learn how to sew your own clothes, and want a more in-depth introduction to dressmaking than our one day beginner classes.
Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place at our beautiful studio at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham, Berkshire. Students get to use our brand new digital Janome sewing machines and class sizes are capped at six to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need.
Day One – PJ Bottoms
During the first day, you’ll sew up a fabulous pair of PJ bottoms. You will learn:
- Measuring yourself accurately
- Reading a dressmaking pattern
- Pinning and cutting fabric accurately
- Sewing & finishing seams
- Creating an elastic waistband
- Standard Hemming
Day Two – Stylish Skirt
When you come back for the second day, you’ll put all your newly learnt skills from day one to use, as well as learning some new ones. You’ll finish the day with a beautiful skirt that is the ultimate wardrobe staple.
Super stylish and simple to sew, this high-waisted straight skirt has a flattering curved waistband for an enhanced fit, concealed zip and mini or knee-length options make it ideal for all seasons.
You will learn:
- Measuring, pattern reading, cutting and sewing as per day one.
- Sewing pockets
- Interfacing and facings
- Creating a structured waistband
- Inserting an invisible zip
- Blind Hemming
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
You will need 2.5m of light to medium cotton fabric for your pyjama bottoms. We recommend cotton poplin, cotton lawn and brushed cottons.
You’ll also need the fabric & matching concealed zip for your skirt. You will need 1.5m of 145cm wide fabric or 2m of 112cm wide. We recommend a medium weight woven fabric such as cotton, stretch cotton, canvas, twill, cord and needlecord, you could even use quilting cotton or lighter weight furnishing fabrics. For a dressed up version use jacquards or brocades.
If you need any help with choosing fabric, please Contact Us.
Everything else, including elastic, interfacing, and thread is all provided and you’ll will get a copy of the patterns so you can make them again outside of the class.
Depending on the speed that you work at (there’s no pressure to race through!) you may need to finish some elements at home. Your tutor will give you clear guidance so you are comfortable doing this.
Once you have completed this course you could go on to complete some of our Improver Dressmaking classes to build on what you have learnt. If you would like to complete this course but are not yet at Level 3, why not try our Introduction to Sewing Course?
