#MySewisfaction meet the maker: Jen Legg

April 18th 2019

This month, it’s time to share another one of out #MySewisfaction monthly makers winners and we’re super excited to announce our March winner is Jen of @jenlegg4

We’re so inspired by every Sewists story and so every month, our winner will be interviewed exclusively on the blog. We chatted with Jen about all things sewing – read on to find out more.

-Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi I’m Jen a 50 something creative girl with a total obsession for florals and jumpsuits. It was such a privilege to win March #MySewisfation as there are so many fantastic makes under this hashtag.

I left school with an ‘O’ Level in Art and gained a place on a full-time hairdressing course. After qualifying I worked in a couple of salons on a rent-a-chair basis building up my clientele until one of the salon owners wasn’t paying the utility bills, electricity board called in to cut the supply off! So, I asked to take over the lease, fast forward a few years the property came up for sale and I bought it at the age of 23!

Even then I had a floral obsession.

I have creative genes, my mam and Aunty used to run fabric shops when I was a teenager, both used to make beautiful clothing for their families, on an outing with my cousins we looked like the ‘Von Trapp’ family.

-How did you get into sewing

After the first series of Sewing Bee I was inspired and thought I can do that. Then the addiction began. I’m lucky enough to have a beautiful (mainly messy) sewing room at home.

The IG sewing community is so inspiring I realised though there was not a lot on offer in the North East in terms of sewing schools so TeesCreatives was established last September. The floors above the salon at my property had been unused for a while so along with husband Leggy- I had the vision he could carry out the work. Perfect partnership to get the mammoth task done. It took blood, sweat and tears (of joy)

-What’s your proudest ever make?

My proudest make every is my #bhlrumana coat. It took over 40 hours to complete from start to finish. I used TeesCreatives to sew my coat so I had a machine 3 machines set up for top stitching, main sewing and lining. During this time if I wasn’t downstairs hairdressing I was upstairs sewing. I am so lucky to be following both passions under one roof.

-What next on your list?

Next on my never-ending list is a capsule wardrobe, my Leggylad has challenged me to a ‘backpack’ island hopping holiday in Greece, so crease proof fabric is needed!

Thanks for sharing your amazing story with us Jen! For more of her makes, be sure to follow her over on Instagram (@JenLegg4) or support her creative business: https://teescreatives.co.uk/
